Philips' activities at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen COP15

December 2, 2009

At Philips we acknowledge the findings of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and believe global emissions should peak ultimately in 2015 and decline thereafter in order to achieve a reduction of 50 global reductions with deeper reductions of about 80% for developed countries in 2050. We also support mandatory cuts in domestic emissions in industrialized countries of at least 30% by 2020.

Philips proposes that significant progress can begin immediately with the knowledge and technology existing today. That is true for consumers, but more importantly, also for businesses and governments themselves. It is possible to slash the energy that is used for lighting our streets, shops, offices, landmarks, schools industries and homes, while at the same time improving quality of life in cities and saving us money on our energy bill.

Business can deliver technologies and financial solutions as well as improve awareness, but governments have to provide economic stimuli and appropriate policies and regulations. So we urge governments to act to set ambitious legislative standards, stimulate the economy to ensure a green recovery and, moreover, lead by example and increase their credibility by making their own buildings, cities and streets energy efficient today.

We have created a comprehensive program of activities that in particular highlights the relevance of acting (more) decisively on advancing Energy Efficiency in the context of Buildings and Cities. The creation of a low carbon infrastructure / sustainable cities is an immediate and actionable win in the battle against climate change. More info.
