NEW LIGHTS OFFER COST SAVINGS OF 80% AND REDUCES CARBON EMISSION SUBSTANTIALLY

Lee Weng Seong at Philips Booth

Kuala Lumpur – Philips, a leading name in lighting solutions introduced today energy efficient lights bulbs for hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and homes at the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications Energy Month launch event.  This is part of the company’s on-going initiative to bring to the market energy efficient lighting that is suitable for all kinds of environment.

The new lights offer energy saving and ambiance setting to suit activities and mood of the place.

According to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Philips Group of Companies in Malaysia, Mr. Lee Weng Seong, “Philips introduced the first Energy Saving Bulb in 1981, and is now the global leader, selling more Compact Flourescent Lamps (CFL) than any other brand. CFL’s continue to gain popularity as one of the simplest ways to reduce our demand for energy. For some people, this means money in the pocket, and a better lifestyle. For others, it’s a way to a more sustainable future.”

In Asia, Philips has a reputation for supplying quality products that are trustworthy and reliable, that really last. However, energy saving comes at the expense of an awkward size of CFL’s as replacement for a GLS (General Lighting Services / filament bulb) for usage at places like hotels, restaurants and homes. With the Philips introduction of the Ambiance Classic range lamps, people can save energy for the lights which have the same shape as the filament bulb.

At the event, Philips showcased its latest range of energy savers which include:

  • Ambiance PAR38 Energy Saver which are suitable for outdoor usage to lite up landscape, water feature, park & garden, offering 80% energy saving and giving an option of two different ambient setting of cool daylight and warm white.
  • Ambiance Classic range suitable for used at Indoor to compliment designer range of fitting with 80% energy saving and it is the perfect replacement for filament bulbs due to it look a like shape with the filament bulbs.
  • Master LED 7W is the new technology of energy saving lamps that give 80% energy saving with very long lifetime that would last up to 25 years based on 5 hours per day usage.

The potential savings of energy saving bulbs are enormous. If all lamps in the whole of Asia Pacific are replaced by energy efficient lighting, the electricity bill for lighting will drop by 40%. This represents a savings of EUR38 billion in energy cost per year, 245 million tones of Co2 emission per year, 55 million barrels of oil per year and annual output of more than 190 power plants @2TWh/year.

“With the announcement by the Malaysian government on the increase in electricity tariffs which came into effect on July 1 this year, energy efficient lighting provides a simple and immediate solution for savings on electricity usage for both residential and industrial,” added Lee.

Existing new lighting technology today offers a triple win proposition —saving cost, energy and the environment. Hence, switching to energy efficient lighting is the quickest and easiest way to make a significant contribution.

Philips has long been an industry leader in introducing cleaner, greener technologies.  In its continuing commitment to dramatically reduce carbon emissions caused by the world’s lighting needs, Philips announced its Fourth EcoVision program last year in September to set a target to double sales from green products to 30% of total revenues within five years and provided a detailed plans to accelerate energy efficiency reductions in our products and operations. These targets mean that by end of 2008, all the company’s offices will be outfitted with energy efficient lighting systems to further reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Furthermore, Philips’ campaign www.asimpleswitch.com communicated to the public at large that solutions in energy management can be simple and easy to implement. Philips range of energy efficient products go beyond lighting as the company also introduced to the market some of its home appliances and consumer electronics products which are energy efficient.
