Background Information on Philips’ Cardiovascular X-ray Business

July 7, 2008

About the business

  • Depending on configuration and device type, a typical high-end cath lab solution costs between €500k – €1.5m. A typical economy solution costs between €100 – €300k
  • The CV X-ray business manufactures products at four different locations around the world:
    • Best, the Netherlands: Manufacturing of X-ray components and complete CV system assembly, research & development, customer services, marketing and clinical science
    • Hamburg, Germany: Manufacturing of X-ray tubes and generators
    • Melbourne, Florida, USA: Research & development, manufacturing, marketing and customer services
    • As a result of the acquisition of VMI-Sistemas Medicos (VMI) in June 2007, a low volume of CV systems is now being assembled in Brazil. These local CV systems are produced for the regional market in LATAM
  • Worldwide, Philips is one of the leading manufacturers of cath labs, with a global market share between 30 and 50 percent in the various market segments

Common uses of CV X-ray solutions

  • Cardiovascular cath labs are used to diagnose cardiovascular disease (typically those relating to the blood vessels) as well as to treat such diseases by means of interventional procedures, using catheters and other intra-vascular devices such as balloons and stents
  • The use of cath labs is principally spread over five clinical domains:
    • Cardiology – Diagnosing and treating blocked arteries ('stenosis') as well as structural disease in the heart through minimally invasive procedures
    • Neuro radiology – Diagnosing and treating blood vessel diseases in the brain through minimally invasive procedures
    • Radiology – Diagnosing and treating blocked arteries in all other parts of the body through minimally invasive procedures
    • Electrophysiology – Treating heart rhythm problems that are caused by the  electrical signals in the heart
    • Surgery – Treating problems across the entire cardiovascular system in a sterile surgical environment

Key CV X-ray products

  • The key range of Philips cath lab solutions is the Allura Xper FD family. Each system type integrates an X-ray tube and detector mounted on a remotely controlled ‘G’ arm, a patient table, an X-ray generator, an image processor, a system controller, display monitors and an IT system
  • The excellent quality of the resulting X-ray images is a key element in the success of the Philips X-ray systems. This image quality is crucial for the interventional specialist to both diagnose the patient as well as to accurately apply the various interventional techniques, e.g. the placing of a stent in a blood vessel
  • Depending on the clinical application, specific system options provide for specific clinical demands such as:
    • Image analysis software to improve the visualization of stents ('StentBoost')
    • 3D image generation and analysis
    • Acquisition, analysis and display of hemodynamic (blood flow) data as well as case reporting
    • Combining X-ray and ultrasound imaging systems to increase the visualization possibilities for the clinician
