The latest news on Philips’ breakthrough new fabric

Seeing is believing, so the saying goes. But suppose what you’re seeing is someone wearing a T-shirt that’s lit up with brightly colored, dynamic animations? Don’t worry, you’re not dreaming! You’re simply looking at a Lumalive – a breakthrough lighting solution that is already wowing the crowds at brand promotions around the world.

Unique expressions
Lumalive, which made its market debut at the IFA trade fair in Berlin in 2006, is a “smart” material that, for the first time, fully integrates LEDs within textile products. Thanks to this development, textile products can now be used to express emotions, show messages or display dynamic, colorful animations. And because the LEDs are integrated so smoothly into the Lumalive fabrics, the touch and feel of the material is not affected – all of which makes Lumalive perfect for textile products, like garments or even special pieces of upholstered furniture.

Wowing the crowds
Since the IFA debut of Lumalive, a lot has been going on behind the scenes, as plans have been developed to grow the venture and create the solutions that meet customers’ needs. “For example, we’ve been showcasing our products at major trade shows in Europe and the US,” says Commercial Director, Gerrit-Willem Prins. “The response has been excellent because Lumalive garments are a unique way for companies to really differentiate their brands at such events.” Lifestyle brands can rent the products and the custom-designed “visual expressions” that appear on them. “The images across several different garments can be synchronized with our Lumalive Composer software. This really captures people’s attention. Everywhere Lumalive is featured, it creates an enormous buzz,” says Prins. In fact, the Lumalive video on YouTube has been viewed over two million times!

Lighting the way
Future developments include Lumalive fabrics that could be used for upholstery and soft furnishings to help hotel chains create highly individualized guest rooms; while in the consumer and professional markets, Lumalive could be used for club wear or safety clothing for cyclists or the emergency services. All solutions will take full advantage of the Philips strengths in the area of solid-state lighting. “In the near future, Lumalive looks set to drive some great growth opportunities for our clients – especially because no other company has been able to replicate Lumalive’s success in this new area of lighting,” says Prins.
