Philips transforms the Singapore Flyer with light

Singapore Flyer

At 165 meters high, the Singapore Flyer stands as tall as a 42-storey building. The gigantic observation wheel is a modern icon in Asia. Towering over the Singapore skyline, it is a testimony to the vision and ingenuity of its designers. Now it is even more impressive because it has been equipped with Philips’ state-of-the-art LED lighting systems, making it a sight to see at night, as well as during the day. It is also the first lighting installation in the world to be controlled using a wireless infrastructure.

Limitless colors and environmentally friendly

Singapore Flyer

The lighting design for Singapore Flyer is based on a dynamic color-changing effect that copies the rotation of the wheel. People in the wheel’s cabins can also experience the exciting lighting effects. The illumination can be controlled wirelessly to create many gradual subtle effects, which can make use of 16.7 million colors. Not only is the Singapore Flyer an awe-inspiring sight to see, it is also environmentally friendly. Through the use of Philips’ state-of-the-art LED lighting system, the observation wheel is about six times more energy efficient than the conventional lighting sources typically used for such projects.

LEDs light the way

Project Lighting Design (PLD) worked closely with Philips Solid-State Lighting Solutions, the new entity formed by Philips’ acquisition of Color Kinetics, to create a mesmerizing lighting effect for the Singapore Flyer. Philips provided the lighting technology and expertise to bring the design to life using the latest intelligent light emitting diodes (LED) system. LEDs are considered to be the biggest revolution in lighting technology since Thomas Edison invented the incandescent bulb. The Singapore Flyer incorporates the Philips’ ColorBlast, which consumes just 50 watts compared to the 300 watts required by a normal spotlight. It also uses Philips’ iColor Accent, which is 50 times more energy efficient than the neon lights traditionally used in linear lighting.
